Sunday 18th July

WSC Women 2 - Clarence United Red 2

The women's team rounded together another point by securing a 2 all draw against Clarence United Red on Sunday. The girls are now on equal points with University, a mere 4 goals separating these two teams on the Div 2 ladder.

WSC 3 - South Hobart 3

(WSC goalscorers: Dale, Justin & Jack)

Woodbridge got off to a flying start with both of the Byrne boys finding the back of South's goal soon after kick off. South pulled a goal back before half-time, but it was really Woodbridge who owned the first half.

South pulled out all the stops in the second, and played a lot better than they had in the first. Unfortunately, the offside rule was interpreted with a great deal of imagination, and consistently from a long way behind the play. So Jack was the only WSC player to score in the second half, adroitly avoiding any chance of an of-side call by delivering the ball to the back of South's net in person.

The game ended as a 3 - 3 draw

Sunday 11th July

Woodbridge senior men's team faced off against a ten man Barnstoneworth United squad at Kettering Oval on Sunday, triggering flash-backs to all those times in previous years when it has been Woodbridge who has entered the field a man (or two, or three) down; it's so nice to see the menfolk consistently able to field a full squad this season.

As so often happens when a team plays with less than eleven players, Barnstoneworth rocketed out of the stalls firing on all ten cylinders, each player putting in extra effort to make up for the shortfall. Unfortunately for the visitors, Woodbridge too, was determined to put on a great performance at this much more public Kettering ground, and having a full squad and a sub ended up making all the difference. By half-time Jack had put the ball into the net twice, once off his foot and once off his head, Dale had scored and so had Justin; Barnstoneworth had managed to get the ball past our keeper only once, so at the break the score stood at 4 – 1.

The second half began with an own-goal from the visitors, which was swiftly followed up by a series of Woodbridge goals, one each from Dalles, Owen and Ryan and another from Dale. The visitors managed to get the ball into the net at the correct end of the pitch once during the second half; but an hour and half of ten men doing the work of eleven had taken it's toll and Woodbridge, with its extra legs. was just warming up. The game ended with a score-line of 9 – 2 in Woodbridge's favour.

Meanwhile, the women's team had journeyed to Blackman's Bay to take on top placed Southern FC. As often happens with a match up between the top and bottom team, the ladder-toppers emerged from the game with the win. The 4 – 0 loss for the Woodbridge girls however, improves dramatically on the 7 – 0 defeat suffered at the hands of Southern FC last time these two teams met.

The 3 goal win 'accidentally' predicted last week, may not have eventuated as such, but there was a 3 goal improvement in the score-line. This proves not only that the Woodbridge team has improved, but also suggests that it might be time to subject the ol' crystal ball to a bit of spit and polish before foreseeing a 3 – 1 win for Woodbridge at Kettering this coming weekend. Ooops.

Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th July

WSC Women 2 - Clarence United Black 4

The WSC women's team, as accidentally predicted last week, showed great improvement against second-placed Clarence United Black at Kettering on Sunday. Laura and Siubhan both contributing a goal each to the 2 - 4 scoreline. Perhaps not a win, but a good showing never-the-less and a lovely improvement from previous meetings.

I might accidentally suggest a much improved and fantastic 3 - 0 win for the girls in an exciting game against Southern FC on the weekend and see what happens...

WSC Men's team 5 - DOSA 1

In the men's div 4 game DOSA scored first but Justin replied with one for the home team shortly after. A disallowed goal, and Jack displaying his integrity by owning up to a hand ball ensured the first half was interesting and ended in a 1-1 draw. In the second half Dale and Jack both scored twice, DOSA's number 11 was red-carded and the full-time score was a 5 - 1 win for the home team.
