WSC Women 1 - Nelson 4

Apologies the women's team played against Nelson Eastern Suburbs last Saturday, not Clarence United Black as suggested in the previous post.

Sunday 27 June

WSC Women 1 - Clarence United Black 4

Kate Followes provided the WSC women's only goal on the weekend at Kettering Oval. The end result of a 4 - 1 loss, improves upon the previous encounters against this second placed Clarence United Black team (where the scorelines had been 4-0 and 5-1 respectively)

WSC Men 1 - Southern FC 1

The men's team travelled to Sherburd Park on Sunday where they mostly contolled play but only managed to scrape a 1-1 draw. The Southern FC Div 4s were SFC's only senior men's team to come away with points on the weekend - thier div 1s (0-13), reserves (3-6) and div 2s (0-3) suffering losses on Saturday.

Dale was once again the goalscorer for Woodbridge, putting in the solo goal from the penatly spot. Overall the result was a little disappointing following last week's game, but never-the-less a fine peformance against a mostly defensive opposition.

Sunday 20 June WSC Vs KLUSC

The WSC men's team was back in top form on Sunday, traveling to Lightwood Park to compete against the Kingborough Lions. With regular goalie Jed P.S. still sidelined due to injury, the Woodbridge goals were guarded by Steve, then Craig and finally by a multi-skilled Jack.

Justin put in the first Woodbridge goal 16 minutes after kick-off and big brother Dale, not to be out-done, matched him 2 minutes later. Kingborough fought back, holding the score line to 2 - 0 until half-time.

The flood gates opened almost immediately in the second, Dale scoring his second and third goals in rapid succession. Jack, shortly before donning the keeper's jersey, headed in a beauty to bring the score to 5 - 0 in Woodbridge's favour. Eventually Kingborough managed to claw back a goal, a lovely and unstoppable long-shot.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Dalles unleashed Super-Sub Jy, one of our Under 16 players who had come along in case the team was undermanned (a situation not unheard of). Within moments Jy had snaked the ball past his former coach* and scored the 6th and final goal for Woodbridge.

The whole team provided a performance that was a joy to watch. An excellent game and a great way to conclude a fantastic weekend of football.

*Jy had started the season at Kingborough, but left to join Woodbridge to avoid being repeatedly mistaken for a goalkeeper

Sun 13 June - The World Game arrives in Kettering

On Sunday the World Game went to Kettering Oval and the inaugural game saw the WSC Women's team secure a whopping 11 - 0 victory over an under-staffed Uni.

The Men's game followed, the lads taking on the powerhouse number two team, Metro. Metro's track record for the season suggests a very strong defence with very few goals against. WSC added 2 goals to that, first Justin and then Ryan, bringing Metro's total goals against for the ten games of the season so far to 8. At the final whistle the result was Metro 3 - WSC 2.

It’s better to travel hopefully than to arrive?

Peninsula Pirates 3 - Woodbridge SC 0

Though the post-match hospitality laid on by the home side made up somewhat for a tiring five-hour round trip, on the long journey home Woodbridge were left to ponder whether it had all been worthwhile.

The match itself was a spirited affair in which, for long stretches, the away side gave a good account of themselves against opposition who have been improving with every game in their inaugural season. The Pirates have developed a promising blend of youth and experience and, in Tadd Mayhew, have possibly the division’s most potent striker. They were strong all over the pitch and outplayed their visitors in most departments but, in the end, it was Mayhew’s goals which separated the teams on the score sheet.

The generosity on display after the match was less evident during it and, for the second week running, the visitors came away feeling somewhat aggrieved by the performance of a home referee, of whom the best that can be said in this case was that he blew his whistle and the beginning and end of each half. Despite being forewarned by the home side of his disinclination to make use of yellow or red cards, Woodbridge were not prepared for the extent of his non-interventionist policy, which saw several shirtfront confrontations go entirely unpunished and bad tackles waved on with a marionette flutter. One such tackle led directly to the first goal, which was put away expertly by Mayhiew after 15 minutes, a lead that the Pirates took with them into the half-time break.

In the second half, the referee showed that his laissez-faire approach to the rules was not limited to not blowing for fouls. After 20 minutes, he extended his repertoire of non-interference to allow a second goal that should have been pulled up for offside long before Mayhiew put it in the net. From there on, Woodbridge had little chance of getting back into the game against opponents who allowed them little time or space to get forward with any great regularity or threat, and went further behind in the last few minutes.

Although being generally outplayed on the day, there was a sense within the Woodbridge camp that this was a game that could have been salvageable had not the loose interpretation of the rules been taken to the point of dangerous absurdity. Indeed, such was the lack of control that there was not one free kick awarded — to either side — during the entire game, a fact that even the Guinness Book of Records might have trouble believing. On another day and against other opponents this could have had serious repercussions, both for the home side and Football Federation Tasmania. In future, teams may well think twice about making the long trip out to Nubeena: balancing the pleasantries of a generous post-match barbecue against the hazards of playing in a game in which the normal rules are effectively suspended for the duration and in which, apparently, almost anything goes, they may well decide that it’s not worth the effort.

Clarence United Red 1 - Woodbridge Women 0

After a strong all-round performance in which they almost came away from Wentworth Park with a well-deserved point, for the second time this season Woodbridge Women lost to almost the last kick of the game.

6 June

The WSC Men's 3 - 0 loss against the Peninsular Pirates at Nubeena on Sunday was perhaps disappointing and has a twofold effect on the div 4 ladder. Firstly it allowed Beachside to displace WSC in third place, secondly it has allowed the Pirates to creep from 6th to 5th place where they now breath threateningly down WSC's (4th placed) necks.

The WSC Women's team also had an away game, travelling to Wentworth Park to take on Clarence United Red. In what looks to have been a tight game on paper the girls conceded only one goal to be defeated 1 - 0.

30 May

A one-all draw against Beachside at Sandown Park on Sunday sees the WSC men's team sneak back up to third position on the div 4 ladder. Jack netted the solo goal for Woodbridge; meanwhile a crop of grazes and bruises to GK Jed's face and chest attest to some fierce competition in the Woodbridge goal-mouth.

WSC Div 2 Women's team suffered a setback on the weekend with a 6 - 0 loss to Southern FC at home. Pundits are predicting a return to winning form this coming Sunday, as an homage to the Matilda's Asia Cup success :)

23 May

WSC Div 2 Women's team lost 5 - 1 against ladder-topping Clarence United Black on Sunday at Wentworth Park. On the bright side, Simone notched up her first goal for the season :D

Meanwhile, the men's team clawed their way back into fourth spot with a 4 - 1 win against University. Dale and Jack contributed 2 goals apiece; Justin put in a beauty too, but was so far offside that spectators thought he was trying out the new pitch at Kettering.

9 May

WSC Div 2 Women's team came away with their first 3 points of the season after securing a well-earned 2 - 1 win against Nelson Eastern Suburbs at North Warrane on Sunday. The win was especially nice considering that last time these two teams met, Nelson walked away with a 12 - 0 win. Having a full team, and a few games to get the hang of playing together has certainly worked a treat for the girls. Goals this week were courtesy of Laura and Kate.

The men's team on the other hand suffered a 5 -1 loss to the lads from the Huon. Lucas opened the scoring with a lovely goal from a sharp angle at the four minute mark and it took Huon Valley around ten minutes to score the equalizer. Things deteriorated from there on, another 3 goals for the huon lads in the first half was only exceeded by the number of free kicks awarded.

Huon, courtesy of the goal difference (jumping from minus 20 to minus 16), escape from the bottom spot on the ladder and Woodbridge slip two spots back to 5th.

2 May

Having travelled to the cold and windy summit of Mount Nelson to take on Uni at Olinda Grove, the WSC div 2 Women's team had another close game. The score-line was ultimately a very respectable 2 - 1 against, with Laura scoring the 'bridges solo goal.

The men's team played in a rather brisk and chilly wind at home . In a game that seemed to be all about the points, a very good performance by our lads was not adequately rewarded, and despite a fairly even looking game they went down 2 -0. See page 22 of this weeks Kingborough Chronicle for full match report.

24 - 15 April

The men's team secured their fourth victory a row, defeating South Hobart 4 - 2 at Wellesley Park on Saturday. The win sees them retaining their spot on top of the Div 4 ladder. Next week's game is against Phoenix Rovers, currently second on the ladder with equal points (12) - but 4 behind on goal difference Phoenix will be keen to regain the number 1 spot, having spent most of last season getting comfortable there ; Woodbridge, however, enjoying this unaccustomed success will not let go easily...

The Div 2 women's team on Sunday came to within a whisker of securing a 1 all draw, only a late goal in the very last moment of the game saw Clarence United Red grab the win. Another great performance from the women's team.

17 -18 April

A resounding 8 -1 victory against Barnstoneworth United on Sunday 18th put the lads on the top of the Div 4 ladder.

Our Div 2 Women's team managed to field a full 11 players for the first time on Sunday 18th April. Although they were defeated by two goals (0 - 2), it was a great effort against second placed Southern FC. We are expecting great things from them on Sunday, 12:30 pm @ home - they have improved drastically with every outing so far...
